Jen Fitzwater was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. Jen found her way to yoga during her junior year at Saint Lawrence University in upstate New York. During an incredibly tumultuous year, she joined a class at the school’s rec center. She was instantly drawn into the practice and very quickly found herself seeking out more yoga at the local studio, finding a sense of grounding that she sorely needed in that time. She was soon leading classes for SLU’s on-campus yoga club and apprenticing with her teacher Sarah, helping with kids’ yoga classes.
Jen knew she wanted to go deeper into her personal practice and learn how to guide and facilitate for others with a teacher training. In the summer following graduation, she took a six-week intensive 200 hour YTT at her new home studio, It’s Yoga Cincinnati (an Ashtanga based studio) in 2012. Jen secured her first teaching position at a new studio in Cincinnati during her practical exam and has taught on and off ever since. Jen has taught in several studios in Cincinnati, multiple music and arts festivals around the Midwest, at community centers in Utah, at a permaculture and natural building workshop in Lunahuaná, Peru, and she is so excited to now be joining the community here at Sierra Shanti in Bishop.
In her own time, Jen is an avid hiker, novice trail runner, canyoneer, aspiring climber, and multi-disciplinary artist. She also teaches English as a second language and spends a lot of time listening to and playing music. Jen’s classes are meant to be fun and a bit challenging with a warmth and calming energy as the arc of the practice comes through to savasana. She can’t wait to meet you all!
