An Introduction to the Sensory-Somatic Technique with Guido Luciani

Our creative energy or life force, is a powerful source of inspiration for artists and a healing and transcending force in both; the artist and non-artist alike. Through a series of sensory-somatic exercises - involving the eight senses as identified in this approach - participants are encouraged to find their own unique path to the awakening of their creative energy. This energy could manifests itself explosively (Explosive Energy) or more introspectively (Potential Energy) therefore in this workshop, you will be presented with both physical and meditative exercises so you can follow the path that feels right for you. The creative energy is “everyone’s life force” so whether you are an artists in need of recharging, a mountain climber wanting to open up your senses to fully take in the energy in your surroundings, an athlete in search of an energy boost or a more sedentary individual looking to better understand how to unleash this life force by engaging the senses; this workshop is for you and everyone will benefit from participating.

Guido Luciani is a multidiscipline Sensory-Somatic Artist. He’s the Artistic Director of The Sensetorm Project and Luciani’s Absolute Theater. He has been coaching actors, dancers and other performing artists for over 40 years. The Sensory-Somatic approach to art and the Basal Awakening and Renewal Exercises were devised and developed during Guido Luciani’s long exploration and collaboration with artists in several countries and cities like New York, Montreal, Los Angeles and San Francisco among others. A fervent believer in the healing powers of art, Guido is looking forward to sharing his vision with other Eastern Sierra based artists and non-artists alike.

We will explore:
  • The concept of the "bare-character”:  the basal state or blank canvas where the connection to our primal self and unconscious can be established
  • The notion of the eight senses and their association with the seven chakras
  • The idea of our “superpower” or “super-sense”: Identifying the sense through which we more quickly connect to our basal state
  • The concepts of “Explosive Energy” and “Potential Energy” and how both are equally powerful
  • The ideas of the Individual and Collective Unconscious/Energy
  • The concept of "Energy Transmutation" or how to transform this raw energy into a creative work, healing energy or whichever other form of energy
This is an introductory workshop so participants will be “introduced” to the concepts mentioned above through guided exercises rather than a lecture. Although you are not obligated to do the physical exercises and could choose a more introspective path, wearing loose, non-restricting clothing is recommended. This work is best performed barefoot, but socks, yoga socks or the like are accepted. No shoes will be allowed in the space. You will need a yoga or exercise mat (so you won’t have to lie down on the bare floor) and a small notepad and pencil to record your thoughts, memories, ideas, etc. during the workshop. If you don’t own a mat, please let us know so we can provide you with one. Please avoid eating a big meal before the workshop and if you are inclined to take the more physical approach, please bring a water bottle for you to drink and a small towel.
